My Story

For Lars Ragnar Karlin, the trombone sound is born through the resonance of the body — it is a voice.
A voice that can sing with intimacy, speak with clarity and resound with power. His playing is distinguished
by a warm, lyrical tone, an intense expressive quality, and an ability to shape phrases in a natural singing flow.Born in Borlänge, Sweden, Karlin’s musical journey began with a fascination for the instrument’s expressive
possibilities. Early guidance from Hans-Göran “Bullas” Olsson and Prof. Sven-Erik Eriksson gave him a solid foundation,
and later studies with Prof. Jonas Bylund and Andreas Klein in Germany opened new dimensions of artistry.
These influences formed the basis of a style that unites Scandinavian clarity with deeply personal expression.Today, Karlin serves as Solotrombonist of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and teaches at the Royal Danish
Academy of Music. He is sought after internationally for his masterclasses, where he shares not only technical
insight but also a deeper approach that integrates breath, body, and mind. His teaching emphasizes a singing approach —
phrasing with intention, breathing with freedom, and playing with a sense of inner meaning.Beyond his orchestral life, Karlin thrives in chamber music and solo performance, where his versatility allows him
to cross boundaries between classical, contemporary, and experimental projects. Whether collaborating with ensembles
such as Trombone Unit Hannover or shaping his own solo programs, his aim is always the same: to tell a story through sound. As a Yamaha Artist, Karlin also contributes to the development of instruments that embody his ideals of resonance
and flexibility. His recordings — from A Swedish Trombone Wilderness to ensemble albums with Trombone Unit Hannover —
reflect his ongoing search for new challenges, textures, and voices within the trombone’s world. At the center of everything lies uncompromising expression. For Karlin, music is not defined by technical perfection alone,
but by its ability to connect, move, and inspire.
